Back-to-School Tip

Stop, Notice, Check, Choose poster

As children head back to school, mornings can become busy and rushed. When children are trying to get dressed, pack their backpacks, remember their belongings, and get out the door, it is easy to miss details or move through routines on autopilot. This simple 4-step strategy can help children develop self-monitoring, body awareness, and independence—skills that are especially useful at the start of a new school year.

🛑 STOP: Pause for a moment.
👀 NOTICE: What do I see, hear, and feel?
✅ CHECK: Do I have everything I need? Is there anything I need to fix?
💡 CHOOSE: What should I do next?

Try putting the visual by the bedroom door, bathroom mirror, or backpack, so your child can practise using it as part of their morning routine. The goal isn’t to remind children about every little thing. It is to help them gradually learn to pause, notice, and check for themselves.

A small pause can make a big difference in starting the school day with confidence and independence!
